While camping under the stars on the sand of PoliHali… a state park on the farthest west edge of the island of Kauai. While relaxing and taking in the amazing beauty of the area, a missile was sighted being launched out of the pacific missile range facility which is next to the park.

After the rocket launched off the ground, it went to a certain height, then another loud noise which sent it quickly out of site of the naked eye. Later that evening, another rocket was launched.

Note: A few days later, when looking at trunk, ran into a gentleman who worked for the missile range, who told me the launch was part of a test of the guidance system.

Since we began this expedition by being dropped off at the foothills of the Brooks Range, we’d be remiss if we didn’t explore deeper in. From the river, the hills look like simple little flat areas of grass… but of course, as with most mountain trekking, that is far from reality.

In this shot, Dave is climbing up one of the hills after we trekked south along the Aichilik to get a sense of how the river was running further in (south). While the easy route would have been to return the way we came, since it was flat and there were enough game trails to follow, we decided to take the road even less travelled.

After short flight on the cub from Kaktovik, our initial drop off point put us in the foothills of the mountains. Go any higher in elevation and we’d have risked having to push or carry our rafts through shallow portions of river. From this point, which was still several days away from our final destination, we would set up our first base camp.

Sunset at Waikiki is always a popular attraction. Droves of tourist from the downtown area congregate at the shore to watch the sun set and hope for a flash of green light.

After an extended weekend down in Oahu which included a trip to Pearl Harbor, relaxing along the beach in Waikiki yielded a great nighttime shot of the shoreline skyline.

Relaxing along the Aichilik River

A photo taken in the Aichilik River valley of Alaska’s ANWR region. This was taken during the late hours of the night at approximately 11pm. Being so far north, the sun never completely sets so there’s little to differentiate from day to day.

This specific photo has been updated somewhat by my good friend Soup Belly to exaggerate the colors in the twilight sky.
