Kipu Falls is a waterfall located along the Huleia River in the Lihue area on the island of Kauai. At about a height of just 15 feet, the falls are definitely not the most impressive on the island, but it has a large swimming pool at its base which is great for jumping off or swinging into by utilizing the great rope swing available just across the stream that feeds the falls.

An overgrown path serves as the easiest (and cheapest) way to the falls.  The path is only about 700 ft. and isn’t at all difficult to traverse. To get into the water, once at the end of the path, continue down the left side to the base.  Alternatively, you can just jump in off the rocks or via the rope swing. A ladder on the far side serves as an easy way back up to the top (though you’ll have to cross the river to get back to the path).

The rope swing and large swimming pool like base are great features of these falls. I’m not necessary the most comfortable with swinging around on rope swings, there was definitely a bit of uneasiness at first, but after taking the leap and plunge into the water below, I can safely say it was definitely worth it.

The trailhead can be easy to spot by the line of garbage cans which are (at least sometimes) just outside of it. But also note that when driving down Kipu Rd, if you cross a bridge (over what would be the Huleia River), you’ve gone too far.  The trailhead would be back about 100 ft or so.

Note: Retrieving the rope can sometimes prove a tad tricky at times despite the great setup that has been created. Consider it part of the fun, and experience as it may take a strong arm or a bit of luck in order to swing the weight out far enough in order to rap it around the rope swing.
