Times Square

Ask most new yorkers what they feel about Times Sq. and they’ll likely tell you that they avoid it at all cost. In a city where its often hard to find a quiet spot, especially within midtown, Times Sq. is about as busy, and as touristy as you can get, two things most locals generally try to avoid. So why would such a place be on my list of favorites?  Simple, no visit to NYC is complete without at least a stroll through the cross section of Seventh Avenue and Broadway.  After all, what other intersection in the world crams more people both on the street, and in front of the television each New Years Eve.

One complaint about Times Sq. these days, besides the crowds, is how family friendly its gotten. Gone are the prostitutes, strip clubs and most of the peep shows and in its place are movie theaters, wax museum, chain restaurants and other popular tourist attractions. Several theaters were remodeled for Broadway plays, but some other historic buildings were demolished. The changes continue, as Broadway becomes more of a pedestrian walkway then major thoroughfare as it has traditionally been. A bike lane and tables and chairs now line major sections of Broadway through the extent of Times Sq.

When you visit New York, and everyone should, definitely check Times Sq. When you’re there, be sure to check out Madame Tussauds wax museum, Ripley’s believe it or not, and at least one Broadway play. A recently completed new ticket office (TIXX) which sells heavily discounted tickets for same day shows is a great resource for saving some hard earned money.  The new facility also is a hot spot as it provides for a great view downtown through the area. During your wanderings around, be on the lookout for some random characters, such as the santa on the right, the naked cowboy and of course the street performers.
